First Look: Magic: the Gathering - BattleGrounds

First Look: Magic: the Gathering - BattleGrounds
Wednesday, August 20th, 2003

One of the most popular table-top gaming systems ever created will make its debut on the Xbox videogame system from Microsoft and the PC this Fall with the release of Magic: the Gathering - BattleGrounds from Atari. Currently in development by Secret Level, Magic: the Gathering - Battlegrounds is filled with faithful translations of classic Magic creatures, spells and enchantments in a visually stunning 3D game environment rife with real-time strategic fighting, devastating wizard arsenals and brutal creature combat.

There are five colors or schools in Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds, black, blue, green, red and white, each denoting a specific proficiency at certain types of activities, such as attacking, defending and healing. Players will be able to select up to two colors and utilize creatures, spells and enchantments in any combination from those schools. For example, a Red Wizard may choose to augment the attacking powers of his Lava Dragon by adding powerful Green enchantments to his arsenal or increase his resilience by using White's restorative powers instead.

Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds will feature an engrossing single-player Quest Mode featuring a story based on the history of Magic: The Gathering while also introducing a variety of new characters and locales. Single-player Quest Mode will be comprised of six chapters, each featuring up to 15 quests. Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds will also feature an entire host of features that take full advantage Xbox Live! for extended online play.

Game Features:
  • Battle online via XboxTM Live and the Internet
  • Mix and match 90 different spells from 5 spell books, (including bonus spells to unlock) providing near-limitless fighting combinations
  • Nine battling wizards, 16 epic arenas - all based on the Magic: The Gathering universe
  • Online content -spells, wizards and assorted extras - updated regularly for player download
  • Comprehensive single-player quests, allowing duelists to acquire spells and artifacts
