Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix Preview

Game Info
Just one of the many console exclusive first person shooters destined for Xbox, Soldier of Fortune 2 utilises "Ghoul 2" technology. Basicly, you shoot someone in the head, their brains fly out. Shoot someone in the leg and they aren't gonna be walking again. As well as this, realistic damage modelling and animations make it look impressively realistic. Xbox Live support will also be included, which will give it an edge over other first person shooters being released at the same time. Another unique feature is the random mission generator, which creates random terrain, buildings, enemies and objectives, for massive replay value. The engine is based on the latest version of iD Software's Quake III engine. The Xbox version will supposedly push the engine further and make the PC version look dated. Some of the character models do look very good, and are fairly detailed.

You play the role of John Mullins, and ex-SAS operative now working for a secret anti-terrorist squad known simply as "The Shop" Missions will include hostage rescue, search and destroy, and occaisonal stealth missions. The stealth missions have been dumbed down slightly from the PC version, both because of some complaints from people who played the PC version and to make it easier for use with a controller. Missions take place in various locations including Switzerland, Columbia, Hong Kong, Prague and Texas. Multiplayer missions on Xbox live will include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Elimination and Infiltration. Hopefully split screen and system link will also make it.

The AI is also fairly advanced, considering what you usually get. Stealth, while important in some missions, can be used in most missions to help minimise hits taken and collateral damage. You can even hide in shadows to avoid patrols (This was out on PC before Splinter Cell was released) Enemies also react to your actions, and different types of enemies will react differently. A sniper may try to engage at long range, but a scount with a sub-machine gun will get as close as possible. As for the fire-power on offer, a wide variety of realisticly modeled weapons are available, including M4 machine guns with grenade launchers, a flamethrower, double Uzis, AK74s, pump action shotguns and more.

Expect this game around late June to Early July, 2003. It should be a fun single player game and be great on Xbox live. It will be great to fill the void until a high profile live enabled shooter comes to Xbox.
