Max Payne was in development for five years. It's main unique feature is bullet time, where the player can slow down the game so that it is possible to see bullets whizzing through the air. This also helps with rapid aiming. The game is set in New York... DEA agent Max Payne has had his wife and family killed by druggies, and has been framed for the murder of a DEA agent. He sets out to kill the person responsible. While the story isn't very original, it is told very well, through the graphic novel. The graphics are nice, but not outstanding. Indoor areas look quite good, but the outside areas often look bare. Some of the character animations and facial expressions are also dodgy. Decent explosion and fire effects, but once again, nothing revolutionary. There is blood, but it doesn't look particularly good. The sound is good... Guns sound like they should, and the sounds are slowed down in bullet time. There are also some vaguely amusing conversations between guards.
The gameplay is fairly repetative. It mostly involves diving around in bullet time while shooting in the general direction of enemies. The AI is average, usually waiting for you instead of running into your line of fire. This makes them easy targets for petrol bombs... Even if the AI isn't great, it doesn't really have a negative effect on the gameplay. A great selection of weapons are available - Berettas, Desert Eagles, 3 shotguns, Ingrams, M4 carbines, Moltov Cocktails and more. The game takes place in many different areas, and takes around 10-15 hours to complete. It has decent replayability though. One of the worst points are a couple of "platform" style levels, which involve jumping between blood trails. There are a few weak attempts at puzzles, but they are mainly using cranes to move objects out of the way, or similar things, that will be easy to work out.
If you want a no-brainer shooting game, this is well worth consideration, especially now that it is going cheap. In some areas it excels over Dead to Rights, but falls short in other areas. It is well worth a rent, if not a purchase, and is a great conversion from the PC game.
