Halo was probably the best launch title, and is still one of the best Xbox games. Developed by Bungie, it's an FPS which was originally intended for PC. Halo has great graphics, perhaps the best of any console first person shooter so far. The explosions are extremely realistic, and it has great water effects. Some of the environments are bump mapped... Shooting down a Banshee(alien vehicle) looks amazing.
Halo has excellent controls. They allow the player to throw grenades, zoom in and melee attack, all without changing weapons. Halo doesn't have a huge amount of weapons, but they do the job. The game is set over 10 levels, which are all about an hour long, some of the larger levels taking 2 hours. The difficulty is perfect - easy will allow anyone to complete it, and legendary will provide a challenge for the best gamers. Perhaps Halo's strongest asset is it's AI, which is the best in any game so far. Enemies will dodge grenades, make use of cover and flanking techniques, and flee when outnumbered, none of which are scripted. 6 vehicles are available to drive, including the Warthog jeep, Banshee jet and Scorpion tank.
Halo has only a few bad points. Some of the indoor levels are a bit repetative, and not many options are available in multiplayer, most importantly, the lack of bots. It also isn't that long, although the replay value makes up for this. Halo took all the best features of many PC and console first person shooters and combined them with great graphics and AI to make a great game. It is well worth a purchase if you like first person shooters or action games.
