Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is the latest in the MK series. It's one of the best, if not the best, title in the series. Read on to find out why!
The gameplay is very, very fun. Each character has three styles: two fighting and one weapon. The fighting styles are real-life styles and Midway hit the nail on the head with every single one of them. Each are very much like the real styles. The weapons are great and varied. Fighting with them isn't as elaborate as Soul Calibur, but that doesn't mean they arn't damn fun to fight with.
All your standard modes are here, including Arcade, Practice, Versus, and the MK specialty, Konquest. There's also Kontent and the Krypt, which I will go over later.
There are a total of 21 characters that you can fight as. However, you start off with only 12. The other nine you must unlock. You will be pleased to find that there's a several new characters, and the older ones look cool. Fans of the series will be dissappointed that there is no Liu Kang. To find out why, watch the beginning FMV.
The finishers are back, but with much less of an inpact. You see, each character has only one fatality. However, with a exception of a few, they are kick ass. Keep your fingers crossed, though, as there are rumors of second fatalities.
Test Your Might is also back. It's still the challenge it used to be, and you get Koins to spend at the Krypt.
Speaking of the Krypt, it is one useful place. You unlock characters and such using the Koins you get for winning fights and Test Your Might/Sight (Test Your Sight is like the game with 3 cups or more and a ball under one, then someone moves them around and you have to guess which one it's in). There are well over 600 coffins with goodies to unlock. This will keep you playing for weeks.
The Kontent is loaded with extras. It has character bios, character endings, drawings, team photos, making of MK, MK history, and a music video of "Immortal".
Graphically, the game is impressive. It sports great anti-aliasing, lighting, shadows, and textures. The arena's look great, as does the blood. Yes, there is plenty of blood. The animations, while not the best, are very good. Also, the framerate never seems to dip.
The fighting arena's are great, some are even interative. I've definatly seen better, but it's no slouch job. The one thing that is wrong with the arena's is the annoying, but sometimes useful, invisble walls around the arena's, which prevent you from knockin ol' Johnny Cage into some lava. No big problem though.
The sound is solid. Grunts, screams, and "Get over here!" are all present. Appropriate music and sound FX are here as well. The infamous MK announcer is back and still great.
As far as replay value, there is plenty to be found. With all the modes, the Krypt, and the Kontent, you'll be playing this title for quite some time. And it's pretty hard to get bored with MK: DA.
I do have a couple nit-picks. The really should have been more fatalites. Also, there are no multi-layered arena's or stage fatalies. Problems aside, there's no denying that this is a great game. Ed Boon and company really did a 180 and made a supurb game. The gameplay, graphics, sound, and replay value are all very, very good. Anyone skeptical shouldn't be at all, because this game will rock your world. If you are looking for a great fighting game, or one of the better games this year, do yourself a favor and buy, or at least rent, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. You won't be disappointed.
