Being labeled the new Halo, I heard Brute Force was one to watch out for. I new it was different to that of Halo but I decided to see how this game did compare to the game before it and look to see what is different and what similarities the two games share.
When you first play this game you will recognize many things that you will be familiar with, the controls are the same as Halo so you will be at home if you are the Halo fan. The first thing you will notice is this game is not first person, so therefore you cannot compare it to Halo in hardly any ways. The game is set in the third person perspective like Max Payne, Enter The Matrix and it gives you a better view of the environment. You control a squad of 4 including you. The squad members are each very different and have different characteristics and specialties which make you utilize the characters in the field. You are given for each character a berserk attack which will help you in combat. Firstly you start off by playing as Tex he is one of those run and shoot people that just charge in and shoot everything his berserk gives him the ability to get both guns out and fire at the same time which can prove very useful in the middle of a huge battle. Next you have a lizard like creature called Brutus, he can run very fast and can hold 2 types of weapons. His Berserk attack shows body heat which can help you find enemies that are hidden away. Then you have Hawk who is an assault woman who uses stealth to beat the enemy. With her berserk she can go invisible and use her special weapon to eliminate the nearby enemies. Lastly there is Flint who is a sniper who holds back from close combat when necessary. Her berserk attack is very useful and auto targets nearby enemies in view which can help overcome tight situations with loads of enemies.
As for the graphics they have been done very nicely and there is a good amount of detail to the whole area. This makes it pleasant to play at most times and the fps rate seems to remain solid throughout the game, even in huge brawls with many enemies. The character models are very nicely done and look very pleasing to look at, there is no mistaking enemies in combat. Before each mission and before you get a new character there is a FMV sequence. The FMVs are used to explain the story and generally tell you what you have to do in the mission. Overall, the graphics are fairly good but have that cartoon feel to them. So if you are looking for realism, you wont be happy with Brute Force.
The sound in Brute Force is pretty good, there is like Halo a more of a orchestral soundtrack to help make scenes more interesting by affecting the mood. The character voices are fairly good and are much better than just reading text. Everything is done by voice acting and in this case it works pretty well. You are mainly instructed by voice with the stereotypical US colonel who guides you through what to do throughout the whole game, however cheesy it may seem it seems to work fairly well. Brutus for example has a croaky deep voice which is more likely than a plain human voice. The sound effects are good from the environment to the gun noises.
Overall Brute Force is a good game but it is definitely not a Halo beater as it was originally rumored to be. The story is stronger with the FMV sequences, but it is simply not as interesting. The characters are a little tacky and stereotypical, but it is still good. As for the gameplay, it is no Halo beater but it shares very similar characteristics and mechanics as Halo, and players will feel at home with the style of gameplay. The sound is very good from the effects to the soundtrack. In the end, the game is a good buy, but if you are looking for a game to replace Halo then you should look at another game as this despite sharing game styles it is no match.
