Metal Gear Solid 2:Substance(or MGS2:S)is the follow up the Metal Gear Solid or (MGS)on the PS One. The story continues two years after MGS. Snake and Otacon have joined together to make an effort to stop the production of Metal Gears and the game continues from there. The game itself is about 10-15 hours the first time through but it's well worth to replay it again. You might see things you missed the first time plus you have the option of collecting dog tags. Dog Tags are gathered off of enemy soldiers. In each difficulty there is a certain number of Dog tags to collect. Collect enough Dog Tags and you uncover Secret Items to use during the story mode. The game is played into two parts. You can either play them separately or both consecutively, I suggest you play them both the first time through to get a real good understanding of the story.
The first part of the game you get to play as Solid Snake. An enhanced Soldier who used to work for a organization known as FoxHound. You mission is to find out where the tank is heading and then find the Metal Gear. For the second part of the story mission you play as Raiden. Raiden was trained by VR missions and sent it to infiltrate a plant known as the Big Shell. The characters themselves are very well animated. You can see the bandana swaying, hair moving, and eyes blinking. They also have a wide variety of moves. They have a 3 hit combo which sends people on their backs, a side toss, grab enemies as shields, a roll attack and if your're sneaky you can hold up soldiers also.
The AI is also top notch. If an enemy spots you they will retreat and call for backup. Should you hide they will do a clearance of all the rooms looking for you. They will search every nook and cranny looking for you in a very cool way using army hand signals. While sometimes they can be blind overall the AI is good. MGS2:S also offers a wide variety of weapons. From handguns to Automatics Rifles to HEAVY explosives.
While MGS2:S has a very good story the Xbox versions also come with alot of goodies. One of those being the graphics. The graphics in the Xbox version are a lot smoother and the game runs at a higher resolution than that of the PS2. The other goodies are 350+ VR missions, 150+ Alternative missions and a scenario where you play as Solid Snake in the plant known as Snake Tales.
The only bad thing about this game is that sometimes the game will slowdown a little. It's not in every part of the game but just some parts. The controls for the game are very good. A button to punch, one to duck, the action button, one to go from third person to first person, one for switching weapons and another for switching items.
Overall this game an enhanced version of the Original Sons of Liberty game on the PS2. If you're into Action/Stealth games you should consider buying this. Even if you own the PS2 version the VR missions offer countless hours of playing and fun.
